City as Educator Fall 2008
Some proposed readings. Some of this is a repeat from the spring semester ...
1. William Shakespeare, The Tempest
2. Bernard Williams, "[Essay with I title I currently cannot recall on Plato]"
3. Montaigne, "Of Cannibals"
4. Plato, Phaedrus
The Phaedrus begins with Socrates asking Phaedrus where he has been and where he is going. The question of placement which begins this work, I believe, carries throughout the work through a heightened consciousness of the immediate environment or setting of the dialogue, and one that I would like to carry through reading The Tempest. Though the environments described in these works are not exactly urban (one of them is a deserted island) isolating some of the contrasts and fluctuations regarding the places of learning and the idea of civilization when those who are used to the city (Socrates, Gonzalo, Prospero, etc.) find themselves elsewhere.
I'm not exactly sure if this is an interesting project or not, but I like to think of it as an opportunity to work a bit closely with some texts I enjoy, especially in attempting to hone my skills, if any, at writing on literature.
An additional subject of interest to me is on the uses of books (or writing) and the information contain therein. This is mostly contained within The Tempest and Phaedrus, though certain other works contemporary with the former (The Autobiography of St. Ignatius of Loyola and Don Quijote, most memorably) also have this quality.
