Here's some open questions to Dr. Varenne:
What is reading, from an anthropological point of view?
Is it the same as listening to other people? Does it serve the same purposes?
How do we study it? Particularly, how do we study the kinds of reading which do not involve reading aloud or with other people?
I ask because I've recently been delving into educational research on reading, and finding it lacking. Not only is it generally prescriptivist, it tends to stop and throw up its hands when it comes to the realization that some of the manifestations of reading may be better described by culture than by behavioralism or cognition. I've seen some more phenomenological educational studies of reading, but I find myself wondering how reading is treated in the field of anthropology proper.
