Study Group Discussion

Thanks to Colin for meeting yesterday. Our conversation centered around a mutual admiration for Du Bois' work. We briefly talked about Du Bois ideas of the "veil" and his discussion of the shortcomings of Booker T. Washington's program.  We also tried to find links between DuBois and the previous texts we've read. Mostly we found similarities between DuBois and Weber, as well as Marx and the most marked dissimilarities between Du Bois and Durkheim. Colin went over a good outline of Du Bois' argument and also explained to me the way Du Bois used the "Songs of Sorrow" in the book (he had a great comment about the operatic quality of the book). Colin also had interesting information based on reviews written at the time of the book's publishing. We both wondered about the direction the class discussion would go, as Colin had known Du Bois' work more from a literary or even political standpoint and less as a sociology. Forgive me for any misinformation, my jet lag is still surprisingly strong.
