Social or individual purposes
From Studyplace
[edit] Do you think the vital purpose of educative efforts is social or individual?
As Chris Higgins observes in the syllabus below, "most would agree that education involves at least these two fundamental tasks: individual self-cultivation and social preservation. But here's the catch: it is not at all clear how education can simultaneously live up to both of these ideals." What difficulties do educators need to surmount in order achieve these divergent purposes? Would someone indicate a few of these, giving them a heading and perhaps a brief description? What are the issues we need to face? What in broadest outline is at stake? Robbie McClintock 07:39, 9 February 2007 (EST)
