"why should social interaction require preliminary learning?" (Retrived from: http://varenne.tc.columbia.edu/class/tf5016/5016_disable.html)

I think that in the social setting of school, preliminary learning is required because of the expectations set by schools. Expectations set by schools can be intertwined with certain values. If one is entering schools with a different set of values or rules, then they will be less likely to satisfy the wants of the schools. In this case, preliminary learning would be useful. For example, Prescott parents were at an advantage because their work-home relationship better satisfied the expectation from the school. (Lareau, 1989) Colton parents could have benefitted from learning this expectation prior to being judged for not satisfying the expectation.
