[edit] Symposium on the Role of Education in Nineteenth-Century America
Over four days in June 1964, a group of American historians gathered at Chatham on Cape Cod to discuss the history of education in nineteenth-century America. The meeting was the last to be sponsored by the Committee on the Role of Education in American History. Eleven scholars presented papers on diverse topics &mdash American exceptionalism, historiography, Catholic schools, science and higher education, university reformers such as Charles W. Eliot, Daniel Coit Gilman, and William Rainey Harper, education and the professions, comparisons of domesticity, Owenite utopianism, and democratic theory in England and America, and Romantic reform.
