About Me:
A native New Yorker, I completed my undergraduate studies in comparative literature and metropolitan studies at NYU. For the past two years, I have been working at a Manhattan-based medical imaging and health multimedia company. Having joined as an intern during college, I have since transitioned to a number of different roles, and currently work on a team that produces health multimedia products including health educational websites. One of the reasons why I was motivated to return to school was (and is) a curiosity to learn about the fundamentals of educational theory and how to apply the pedagogy into technology to create fun, engaging, and effective interactive products. I am also interested in how the intersections of education and technology – its design and creation – can impact and serve as agents of change (for lack of a better phrase) to promote sustainable development and growth.
I am currently a part-time student while working full-time. This means that I tend to make mad dashes from my office (downtown) to get to class – so I apologize beforehand of what may be a reoccurring disheveled, out-of-breath appearance. I promise, I'm usually a lot more laid-back!
Research Interests:
One Laptop Per Child: I am fascinated and eager learn more about all the issues and questions raised by this initiative – educational, technological, political, societal, economic – and the implications of technology to educate in a global scale. I am interested the ideas presented and challenged by this initiative (in particular, the broader sense) regarding points like technology leveling the playing field (as discussed in Thomas Friedman’s book, The World is Flat), how the roles of teacher and learner/student are (re)defined by technology, how the learning and instructional processes are informed and modified by environment and space, and ultimately, just how this laptop actually works.
Other research interests include - social entrepreneurship, sustainable development, health education, educational games, etc.
Whose work or research interests you and why?
Games 4 Change– I am intrigued by the idea of using games for social change, and wonder just how you actually go about designing and creating games that inspire and mobilize people to act, from the digital space to the real world. I’m not all that familiar with this group, so I’d like to find out more; if anyone knows more information, I’m all ears!

[edit] About me
I'm a Georgia boy recently returning to the U.S. after a few years of independent international projects. In the past four years I have worked as an International Economist in Washington DC, an Economic Development Consultant in Panama, an Internet Marketing Consultant in Martinique, a Business Journalist in Shanghai, a Project Manager in New York, and an Anticorruption Strategist in Panama. I am now psyched to be living in Manhattan for my first time!
[edit] My Interests at Teachers College
I have enrolled in a masters degree in Instructional Technology & Media in order to give more substance and direction to some of my nascent entrepreneurial ideas. My interests fall into the following broad categories:
(1) Adult recreational learning of facts and concepts (2) New ways for students to measure and track their knowledge (3) Design of optimal learning environments (4) Classroom tools that link learners from organizations across the globe
[edit] My Interests after Teachers College
If I don't end up becoming comfortable enough with any of my business ideas to start a company myself, I hope to work for a consulting firm, or for a firm that develops learning tools.

EdD Student Communication and Education

Fall of '07 Entry
Philadelphia, PA. U.S.
rwm2118@columbia.edu
I'm currently an adjunct professor of communications at Temple University, where I've taught such classes as "Advanced Producing and Directing" and "Mass Media and Children" to name a few. I've also instructed at Delaware County Community College teaching courses such as "Intro to Mass Communications" and "Intro to Interpersonal Communications." I'm a documentary filmmaker; a feature length film I co-directed is premiering at Philadelphia Film Festival in April 2008. It is titled Bloodlines: Video Diary Project and involves, in part, two Philadelphia youths who document their own 8th grade school years. I'm also producing, co-directing, and editing a feature length film concerning Catholicism, religion, politics and children titled Father, I am Lost which will be completed, God willing, sometime in '08 or '09.
I own a production company, PAC Productions, which, among other things, promotes and hosts electronic music events in Philadelphia, particularly of the drum 'n bass genre where I perform as a dnb vocalist under the moniker Humdrum. As a direct result (I think), my MA thesis work promotes media literacy, and discusses the use of popular communications such as song lyrics (mostly rap or hip-hop) as a potential learning tool rather than as something to be ignored, judged in value, or censored by educators. If possible, I will likely continue with a similar course of study for the dissertation with the eventual goal of developing media literacy curriculum, for humanities classrooms, that is sensitive to individual student interests and non-traditional literacies. Robert Scholes' book The Rise and Fall of English best reflects my pursuit.
Last, I've helped conceive, develop and promote an interactive social network titled collegeweb.com (similar to myspace or facebook) that has a small, yet unique and growing presence at several American universities. Following Temple University we'll likely launch at Columbia! Ask me about it if you would like to get involved!
Please find the course wiki for the Introduction to Interpersonal Communication course I'm teaching at Delaware County Community College (PA) here

Home town, Country: Ira, Vermont, USA
Which degree program are you completing, and at what stage are you now? EdD - Instructional Technology & Media. Finished with course work as of Spring 2007. Hope to propose dissertation in Fall 2008.
What do you hope to do with your degree? I'm interested in starting an educational technology consulting company. Something small and project oriented. I also enjoy teaching and may try to teach at the university level before venturing into self-employment.
What are your academic interests? I'm interested in the impact of educational games on the affective and motivational domains, especially in elementary aged children. Specifically, I'm studying the impact of game play on constructs such as self-efficacy, self-concept, and intrinsic motivation.
Whose work or research interests you and why? Recently, I've been reading a lot of work by Jacquelynne S. Eccles. Eccles is the Director of the Gender and Achievement Research Program at the University of Michigan. She's well known for her work related to adolescent development of self-esteem, activity preference, and task choice. I spend a lot of time thinking about how her work relates to educational video games.
What might other students want to ask you about? Ask me about LearnPlay or Introduction to Flash-Based Interactive Media
If you could give advice to an incoming student, what would it be? I would encourage any incoming student to be a self-starter. This program has a lot to offer students who are willing to get out there and make things happen. Go knock on doors and create opportunity. Introduce yourself to people, get involved in projects, and find the people you want to work with. I feel this is the best way to get the most out of TC and CCTE.

About Me: Originally I grew up here in New England, moved to North Carolina after undergrad. to start a technology training company, and then returned to school in hopes of taking the next step. That next step entails producing deeper educational video games and possibly teaching at the university level. You'll find more at my online portfolio: www.unlinear.org.
Research Interests: I started with broad interests in Artificial Intelligence, mental model formation, Human Computer Interface design, motivation, and video games. This has led...hmm...to a point of confusion. This semester I'll be writing my literature review and proposing a disseration. One idea is to research how digital representations of complex systems can improve far knowledge transfer. Specifically, such representations would focus on relating the same topic between multiple perspectives and/or from different levels of abstraction. This might make more sense, given an example. Check out McGill's The Brain from Top to Bottom, noticing how the site breaks down topics of psychology and neurology.
Whose work or research interests you and why?
John Dewey – for his overall vision of learners as active, engaged citizens
David Jonassen – for his insight into how system modeling can support learning
Marvin Minsky, John Anderson, John Black, Xin Bai, and others - regarding their theories about mental models & the structure of cognition
Ask Me About: If you are a new student and want to connect with others interested in how games can educate and how education might use games, ask me about LearnPlay

More about me: Born and raised in Worcester, MA (aka Wusta or the Wu). I studied French language and culture on the shores of the Thames River at Connecticut College, where I also learned about those things called "computers" and "the web" via my job at the school's language lab. After graduation, I found myself gainfully employed at the Center for Educational Technology, a regional center of the Andrew W. Mellon-funded National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education based at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. During my 3 years as a full-time member of the staff at the CET, my main responsibilities were to provide instructional and developmental support for technology programs, with an emphasis on languages and pedagogy, and to teach workshops on multimedia production and web authoring.
Although no longer on staff, I have consulted as a visiting instructor
to NITLE, teaching workshops to faculty and instructional technologists on computer-mediated communication, and social software in education.
I'm currently pursuing a doctorate full time here at TC. I also work part time as a Research Assistant, formerly for the CTELL project (under Chuck Kinzer), and currently for the ICP project (also under Chuck Kinzer). My dissertation topic explores the role that technology plays in the social identity work of college students, and the technology practices of college students in general; other interests run toward weblogs and their uses in education, youth culture, and social software. More thoughts and conversations on these topics at my blog.

More About me: I am developing, and teaching courses for middle and high school students across cultures and subject areas, particularly in ways involving the outdoors. For a variety of my curricular materials and student work, go to PocketKnowledge and search “Boatworks” or “water’s edge,” then click “all”. At what stage are you now, and in which degree program Ten credits and a project away from the Ed.M. in Communication & Education; strong involvement in teaching, community activism and service learning have enriched my progress toward graduation.
What are your academic interests? The scholarship of learning, history of technology, with an inclination toward art and aesthetics. I believe the profound issue now is how communication systems can assist in creating the environmental education and ecological sustainability essential for global survival, and I am using that as a lens in research and academic work.
What do you hope to do with your degree? Continue to enjoy life, develop deeper understandings, and support myself, my mother, and Philip financially and emotionally as best I can while continuing to teach and learn in the fields of in-school and supplementary education.
Where do you see yourself after graduating? I see myself remaining in NYC, which is home to me.
If you could ask a returning student a question, what would you ask? What have you enjoyed most in your experience at TC? How do you balance studying broadly and developing expertise?
What might other students want to ask you about? Life and longevity, recreational rowing, social activism.
