Address, as both a verb and a noun, indicates a phenomenon of major importance in cultural history, an importance that has not been sufficiently appreciated.
People address one another as they communicate, and what they can communicate, how and to whom, depends largely on the different ways they have for giving cultural meanings a stable address, one that enables different people to find the meaning. Major stages in the history of communication have developed in association with the invention and use of new forms of addressing meanings from chiseling them in a prominently placed rock to assigning them a very abstract, ethereal "universal resource locator."
An address must locate a bearer of meaning in shared space and time.
