A&HH4901 — Humanistic Studies in a digital commons — Spring 2007
Through Humanistic studies in a digital commons, participants can work on academic projects of their choice within a digital commons, www.studyplace.org, where people join to respond in diverse ways to the question, What educates? Participants work towards two objectives —
- to advance lines of inquiry of importance to their scholarship and writing and
- to explore how they and others can best do that through open-source peer production.
Problems and opportunities
As you see design/usability/substantive questions arising, please raise them and explain the matter as you see it.
- Is the recommendation that there be a ContextPage and an ArticlePage for each article a good idea? –a workable idea? – an idea that will discourage participation? – an idea that will facilitate intellectually effective collaboration? See Help:New articles and the templates described there.
- Currently, we have protected the hub pages so that they stay relatively constant on the theory that users will not want to have to puzzle out how to navigate through them each time they use them. A trade-off arises from that practice, however, as it becomes a bit more cumbersome to add new topics. For the present, it is likely that if the hub pages were unprotected there would not be much change in them on a perceptible basis. Should we remove the protection?
Projects
- I'm interested in lots of stuff, but right now I'm trying to think through how schools of education educate. This project is at the center of my dissertation. I'm also interested in exploring the implications of internal-essentialist foundations for justice. neil 09:30, 22 January 2007 (EST)
- In the relatively short term, I'd like to collate the readings I've done that relate to the tenatively titled project I aim to start. I hope this will help determine the nature of my impending Ed.M. project: will I do research with newspapers and/or archives on a discrete historical period as an example of the phenomenon I can only poorly describe? If so, which period, and where? Or, will a long-term but general direction work better? Eric Strome 21:58, 24 January 2007 (EST)
- There are two projects that I'm considering as potential contributions to StudyPlace: one is a study of digital technology, community, and schools, the other would begin to address the statement software educates. You can read more about them on my user page. I'm hoping that our group will have some suggestions about which is more interesting and some direction on how to pursue these topics. - i am very interested in how templated web services can operate within any given educative structure. its interesting to me that the fact of direct consistency between a students' leisure use of digital tech and their working use of the same tech becomes an enabler, perhaps promoting education projects to be more readily accepted by students. perhaps this is a little naive; perhaps its serendipity. either wat its screaming at me to investigate the aesthetics of the educative interface, especially through digital technology, the power of which i fear will become lost to educators if we all have to wait for peer reviews to tell us its OK go ahead use it...(i don't mean to sound so disparaging!)andrew 23:03, 25 january, 2007
